![]() ![]() Three months ago, Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan shocked most of the boxing public by announcing that Khan would fight Alvarez for his lineal middleweight championship. Stevens has the kind of power that could make most middleweights buckle. He's now 28-5 with 21 knockouts, and he's won three of his last five fights. For two, it puts Stevens back in a situation where he can, once again, make a little noise in the middleweight division. For one, Teixeira was an undefeated prospect for Golden Boy Promotions. Herrera has given fighters like Danny Garcia, Mike Alvarado and Karim Mayfield tough fights, but against Gomez, he had nothing.Ĭurtis Stevens-Patrick Teixeira: In the first fight of the HBO broadcast, Stevens scored an impressive second-round knockout vs. Gomez improves to 21-0, and his win Saturday came against the best opponent he's ever faced. the solid Herrera, shutting him out in a unanimous decision. Lemieux also said he would like to fight the winner of the Alvarez-Khan main event.įrankie Gomez-Mauricio Herrera: Trained by Freddie Roach, Gomez scored a nice victory vs. We wanted to box him and start landing the shots slowly. It was more of a flash knockdown."Īfter the fight, Lemieux said, "He's a very solid fighter. "If you would have given me one more round. "I was mad," Tapia told HBO's Max Kellerman a few minutes later. But he's taking some punishment in his career, though he had never been knocked down in a fight before, and his corner probably wanted to save him. To my eyes, Tapia certainly could have continued and probably wanted to do so. Tapia pleaded with them not to halt the fight, but ultimately, the corner told the referee that Tapia was done. Tapia's corner stepped onto the ring and was about to throw in the towel. ![]() But Lemieux hurt Tapia in the second round and knocked him down in the fourth round. It looked early like Tapia, who was moving up to middleweight for this fight, attempted to box - and not brawl - with Lemieux. Undercard: Here, by the way, was Tapia's reaction to his corner stopping the fight, courtesy HBO PPV.ĭavid Lemieux-Glen Tapia: The last time we saw Lemieux, he was getting beaten up by Gennady Golovkin, and the last time most people saw Tapia was when he was getting destroyed by James Kirkland in a devastating fight. But he bounds into the ring and looks ready to fight. He might be relaxed, but he doesn't look it. Honestly, in my eyes, he looks a bit apprehensive. He's mostly looking at his feet as he walks, and he blows a kiss to the crowd before stepping through the ropes.Īmir Khan ringwalk: He's bouncing on his feet and chewing gum as he walks to the ring. Alvarez nods to the crowd as he makes his way to the ring. Though the British fight fans are known to travel well, it seemed unlikely that Khan's supporters would out-number (or out-cheer) those of Alvarez's. Forbes gives the round to Khan.Ĭanelo Alvarez ringwalk: Alvarez seems to get the bigger cheers from the 20,000-strong crowd. Alvarez landed a pretty clean left hook with a minute left in the round, but Khan took it well. It didn't affect Alvarez, but it was a nice punch nonetheless. Thirty seconds in, Khan lands a big right hand on Alvarez's chin. Khan is a little taller, and honestly, he looks almost as big as Alvarez. Round 1: It was weird not to hear Michael Buffer make the prefight introductions, but somehow both fighters find the will to fight anyway. So far, it hasn't happened, because Khan is out-boxing him. Khan is landing combinations, but it's almost like we're waiting for Alvarez to counterpunch him and blast him out of the ring. At times, Alvarez wildly misses with big shots. Round 2: Khan's hands are obviously faster, but Alvarez is a little more aggressive in this round. This round is pretty much a toss-up, but I like it for Khan because he's controlled the action. Khan has been great defensively, but in this round, he hasn't done much on offense. But he has hit Khan cleanly a few times, and Khan has been fine thus far. We won't know for sure if that's true until Alvarez lands a big shot. Round 3: In the leadup to the fight, Khan has given the impression that since he's moved up in weight, his chin has gotten stronger. Alvarez's jab, though, has made its introduction to Khan's face in this round. Khan has a nice moment when he fires a three-punch counterpunch combination after Alvarez whiffs. Round 4: One minute in, Alvarez lands his best body punch of the night, a right hand to Khan's side.
